Complete route and diary
Antigua – St. Martin – Bermuda – Azores Islands, that was the 3477 nm route Joy took between mid August and end of September. The combination of a bad non-tropical storm to the north and tropical storm Joyce forced us to make a detour of some 300 nm. A monstrous squall at the edge of the storm system unfortunately ripped our main into pieces. The remainder of this leg to Horta it was all genoa and gennaker, headsail only. From there it was another 1210 nm to the final stop in Tangier – with a new mainsail.
Here a few charts for illustration:

Avoiding Joyce
We had to find our way around a storm front in the North and tropical storm Joyce approaching yet forecast to turn around.
A ferocious squall killed our mainsail, we then ran off the storm barepole and sailed a route to avoid Joyce, yet catch a promising wind field in its wake.
