S/V ALEGRÍA
Alegría is a Bristol 41.1 designed by Ted Hood and Dieter Empacher and built in 1984 in the Bristol boatyard in Rhode Island she was launched under the name ‘JOY’ as a ‘Performance Cruiser’. In 2023 after 8 years under the flag of Antigua & Barbuda Joy was registered under the beautiful flag of San Marino and renamed ALEGRÍA, meaning ‘Joy’ in Spanish. A fresh start yet carrying forward her legacy.
Due to her hull’s elegant lines she smoothly moves through even heavy seas without any slamming. Her elongated keel makes her keep her course with little effort at the wheel. Her keel is integrated into the extremely strong built hull, the mast is keel stepped, the center cockpit layout and the skeg-hung rudder provide maximum safety.
Alegría is equipped with a six person Plastimo Transocean life raft, EPIRB and a FindmySpot tracking device as well as VHF radio and an Iridium sat phone. She carries two life rings, life vests and even life vests for kids. An automatic fire extinguisher in the engine room, three more fire extinguishers in cabins and saloon as well as a fire blanket in the galley make sure we can handle the unlikely event of a fire aboard.
In 2016 she got a brand new Betamarine 50 hp engine. Very simple, very reliable diesel, easy in maintainance and working really well with the Max Prop feathering propeller. Nevertheless we barely use it … she is a sail boat, after all.
Alegría does not have an autopilot – we just love sailing her ourselves way too much.
Her conventional main sail is fully battened, we carry two roll reef genoas, a gennaker and an additional smaller light wind staysail. Alegría’s massive Lewmark 55 genoa winches will never let you down.
Alegría picks up speed very quickly even in light wind and is particularly easy to sail in mid range winds but it is when things get a bit rougher that she really shines, ploughing through the seas keeping you safe at all times.
Alegría meaning ‘joy’ in Spansh Nomen est omen. She is simply a joy to sail.
Down below she is a masterpiece of joinery and offers generous headroom throughout saloon and cabins. Joy has one very spacious master cabin aft and a two bunk forward cabin. The saloon sleeps two more. There are two heads and a well equipped kitchen.
